"Is yam good for weight loss, or do I have to stop eating it?"
If you've asked yourself this, you're in good company.
It's one of the questions we hear most often from clients at HueBeautyGlam, usually right before they admit that boiled yam and egg sauce is their Saturday breakfast. 😏
On its own, yam isn't the problem.
How much you eat, how it's cooked and what sits beside it on the plate decide whether it helps or slows you down.
So we put this guide together to help you understand how to portion your yam-based meals and lose weight effectively.
Let's get into it.
TL;DR: Is Yam Good for Weight Loss?
-
Yes, yam is good for weight loss in measured portions. It's a starchy carbohydrate with fibre and potassium, and it isn't fattening on its own.
-
Boiled yam has about 116 calories per 100g. One cup of boiled yam cubes (136g) has about 158 calories.
-
Boiled and roasted yam are the best options. Fried yam soaks up oil, and pounded yam raises blood sugar the fastest.
-
A practical starting portion is 1 to 1.5 cups (136-200g) of boiled yam per meal, paired with protein and vegetables.
-
Realistic weight loss from diet changes is 0.5-1kg per week, and losing just 5% of your body weight improves blood pressure and blood sugar.
-
If you have diabetes or kidney disease, plan your yam portions with your doctor.
-
If eating well isn't moving the scale after 6-9 months, speak with a HueBeautyGlam weight loss consultant about your medical weight loss options in Nigeria.
What Makes Yam Work for a Weight Loss Diet?

Yam can fit into a weight loss diet when you pay attention to three things:
-
Your portion: Boiled yam has about 116 calories per 100g. Keeping your serving measured helps you control how many calories you get from the meal.
-
How you prepare it: Boiling or roasting yam without added oil keeps the calorie content lower. Fried yam absorbs oil during cooking, which can significantly increase its calories.
-
What you eat with it: Yam is mainly a carbohydrate and provides little protein. Pair it with eggs, fish, chicken or another protein source to make the meal more balanced and filling.
You don't have to completely cut out foods you grew up eating to lose weight.
At HueBeautyGlam, we focus on helping clients manage portions and build balanced meals around foods they already enjoy.
How Many Calories Are in Yam?
The calories in yam vary depending on whether you weigh it raw, cooked or after processing.

If you are tracking calories, weigh your yam after cooking if that is how you normally eat it. This gives you a more useful estimate for the portion on your plate.
P.S. Check the ingredient list on your poundo pack. Some products marketed as pounded yam contain potato granules, rice or food starch, with little or no yam.
Which Yam Is Best for Weight Loss?
If you're choosing between different yam preparations, boiled and roasted yam are the easiest options to work into a weight loss diet.
Fried yam adds calories from oil, while pounded yam can be easier to overeat.

Another reason to look at how yam is prepared is because of how quickly it raises your blood sugar. This is where the glycemic index comes in.
GI (glycemic index) measures how quickly a carbohydrate-containing food raises your blood sugar after you eat it.
Foods with a high GI cause blood sugar to rise more quickly, while low-GI foods cause a slower, steadier rise.
This matters because foods that cause a slower rise in blood sugar may help you stay satisfied for longer and make hunger easier to manage between meals. GI can also be useful when managing blood sugar or insulin resistance.
Yam's GI can change depending on the variety and how you prepare it. Here's how different preparations compare:

Is Pounded Yam Good for Weight Loss?
Pounded yam can still fit into a weight loss diet. The bigger concern is usually portion size.

Because pounded yam is soft and easy to eat quickly, you may finish a large serving before you feel satisfied. A 400g wrap can provide roughly 440-520 calories before you add soup.
If you enjoy pounded yam, choose a smaller wrap and load your soup with vegetables and a good protein source.
Is Fried Yam Bad for Weight Loss?
Fried yam isn't off-limits, but frying adds calories from the oil it absorbs.
One tablespoon of oil contains about 120 calories, so the amount used during cooking can quickly change the calorie content of your meal.
For a lower-calorie option, roast or air-fry your yam with a small amount of oil instead.
Is Water Yam Good for Weight Loss?
Yes. Water yam, also called ewura, can fit into a weight loss diet.
Boiled water yam has a reported GI of about 50. You can also enjoy dishes such as ikokore while watching how much palm oil goes into the preparation.
The goal isn't to find a yam you can eat without limits. It's to choose preparations and portions that make it easier to stay within your calorie needs.
How Much Yam Should You Eat When Trying to Lose Weight?
A practical starting portion is 1 to 1.5 cups of boiled yam (136-200g) per meal.
That works out to roughly 158-232 calories before adding your protein, vegetables or sauce.
Your ideal portion may be smaller or larger depending on your overall calorie needs, activity level and how filling the rest of your meal is.
Don't rely on the size of a yam slice. Slices vary too much to give you a useful portion estimate.
Weigh your usual serving once or twice with a kitchen scale, then you'll have a better idea of what 150g or 200g looks like on your plate.

If you're still hungry after eating yam, add more vegetables or protein before adding another large serving of yam.
This gives you more food without pushing the meal's carbohydrate and calorie content up as quickly.
What Should You Eat With Yam to Lose Weight?
Eat yam with a protein and a vegetable: boiled eggs, grilled or peppered fish, skinless chicken, or a light garden egg or ugu sauce.
Protein and vegetables make the meal more filling without adding many calories. In most Nigerian yam meals, the bigger weight-gain risk is the oil in the sauce, not the yam.
Pairings that work:
-
Yam and egg: One large boiled egg has about 78 calories. Egg sauce made with 2 eggs and 2 tablespoons of oil is roughly 400 calories before the yam. Use 1 tablespoon of oil and you save about 120 calories.
-
Yam and fish or chicken: Grilled, peppered or in pepper soup, not fried.
-
Yam and vegetable sauce: Garden egg, ugu, spinach or a simple tomato-pepper sauce add volume for very few calories.
-
Yam and beans: Filling, but it's a lot of starch on one plate. Halve your yam if you're adding beans.
Pairings to watch: fried yam with fried fish or akara (a double-fried plate), pounded yam with oily egusi (try efo riro or okra instead), and yam porridge heavy on palm oil.
For example, a balanced yam-based meal could be 200g of boiled yam, two boiled eggs and tomato-pepper sauce made with one tablespoon of oil. Together, that meal comes to about 530 calories.
That gives you a better picture of what the 200g yam portion looks like in a real meal. The yam is only one part of the calorie count; the eggs and cooking oil contribute calories too.

How Much Weight Can You Realistically Lose by Changing What You Eat?
Changing what you eat and becoming more physically active can support steady weight loss.
A realistic rate for many adults is around 0.5–1kg per week, although your results will vary.
Even that pace can be difficult to maintain. Some people may lose less than 0.5kg in a week despite consistently improving their diet and staying active.
Your body weight can also fluctuate from week to week, so one slow week does not mean your efforts aren't working.
You don't need to lose a large amount of weight before seeing health benefits.
Losing 5% of your starting body weight can improve blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.

What If You're Eating Well and the Scale Still Isn't Moving?
Eating well and exercising regularly can support weight loss, but they don't guarantee significant weight loss for everyone.

This is something we've seen repeatedly at HueBeautyGlam.
Some of our clients had already tried dieting, exercise or other weight loss approaches before coming to us.
After a consultation, some were recommended medically supported weight loss alongside changes to their diet and activity.
Here are some of their journeys:
-
After years of trying diets and exercising without seeing the progress she wanted, Shola started a personalised Tizaro treatment plan after consulting with HueBeautyGlam. She lost 5kg in her first month and reported that managing her appetite became easier.
-
Ifeanyi started at 106kg after struggling with weight gain linked to years of beer and late-night eating. We paired his Tizaro treatment with a calorie-controlled meal plan, and he lost 10kg, reaching 96kg.
-
Tessy lost 15kg on Mounjaro, going from 96.4kg to 81.4kg. She was also managing insulin-resistant PCOS. Her story is a good example of why weight management sometimes needs to consider more than food and exercise alone.
-
Chinonso lost 3.4kg in three weeks on Mounjaro, going from 102kg to 98.6kg. He told us that his appetite reduced and that smaller portions became easier to manage.
-
Idongesit lost 26kg in four months on Mounjaro. She started with a goal of losing 40kg and continued working towards it after reaching the 26kg milestone.
Across our published customer journeys, we've seen weight losses ranging from 3.4kg in three weeks to 26kg in four months.
Those numbers are not a prediction of what you will lose. They are individual customer results, and your response to treatment can be very different.
How Can Weight Loss Medication Help?
Weight loss medication can provide additional support when diet and exercise alone aren't producing the results you need.
For people who are medically suitable for treatment, medications such as tirzepatide and semaglutide may help by:
-
Reducing appetite: They act on hormone pathways involved in hunger, which can make it easier to eat less without constantly feeling hungry.
-
Increasing fullness: These medications can help you feel satisfied for longer after meals, which may reduce frequent snacking and large portions.
-
Making a calorie deficit easier to maintain: Eating fewer calories is still necessary for weight loss, but controlling hunger can make that deficit more manageable.
-
Supporting greater weight loss: Clinical trials have found that tirzepatide can produce substantially more weight loss than lifestyle intervention alone in appropriate patients. In SURMOUNT-1, participants taking tirzepatide lost an average of 15.0% to 20.9% of their starting body weight over 72 weeks, depending on the dose.
-
Providing support alongside lifestyle changes: Weight loss medication isn't a replacement for nutritious food or physical activity. It is designed to work alongside these habits.
Your response will depend on factors such as your starting weight, dose, health history, medications and how your body responds to treatment. Weight loss medication also isn't appropriate for everyone.
That's why treatment should start with a proper consultation rather than simply choosing an injection because someone else achieved a particular result.
Who Should Be Careful With Yam Based Meals?
Yam is high in starch and potassium, and the right amount depends on your blood sugar control and kidney function.
-
If you have diabetes: Choose boiled yam over pounded yam, keep to a measured portion and pair it with protein. Checking your blood sugar after meals shows how your body handles it.
-
If you have kidney disease: One cup of boiled yam has about 900mg of potassium. If you've been told to limit potassium, ask your doctor how much yam fits.
-
If you're on a prescribed low-carb diet: Yam is mostly carbohydrate, so follow the limits your doctor or dietitian set.
Frequently Asked Questions About Yam and Weight Loss
Is yam good for belly fat?
No food burns belly fat directly. Belly fat reduces as your overall body fat drops in a calorie deficit, and boiled yam in measured portions fits into that kind of diet.
Can you eat yam every day?
Yes, as long as each portion fits your daily calories. Rotating it with beans, plantain and oats gives you a wider range of nutrients.
Can I eat yam at night?
Yes. Total daily calories matter more than the time you eat. If dinner is late, a smaller portion with more vegetables may feel more comfortable.
Is yam or sweet potato better for weight loss?
Both work. Boiled sweet potato is slightly lower in calories (about 76 per 100g compared with 116 for boiled yam). Choose the one you'll enjoy and stick to measured portions.
Does yam contain sugar?
Yam contains very little sugar, about 0.5g per 100g. Most of its carbohydrate is starch, which your body breaks down into glucose, so portion size still affects your blood sugar.
Does HueBeautyGlam offer weight loss consultations?
Yes. HueBeautyGlam offers weight loss consultations on WhatsApp and at our Lekki, Lagos office, and we deliver nationwide. We review your weight, health history and goals before recommending any product.
Should You Stop Eating Yam to Lose Weight?
No, you don't have to stop eating yam to lose weight.
You simply need to pair your yam with eggs, fish, chicken or vegetables to make the meal more filling.
However, if you've been eating a well balanced meal, exercising and controlling your portions for months but still aren't seeing meaningful results, it may be time to get professional guidance.
